SenseMaker Suite. The basic unit of analysis within SenseMaker is the sense-making item or SMI.

The basic unit of analysis within SenseMaker™ is the sense-making item or SMI. This can be an anecdote, a document, a photograph, a drawing, a blog or other URL reference. The SMI is normally indexed using a semi-structured set of tags at the point of origin, by its creator.

In other applications which focus on analyst productivity the material is indexed by specialists for fast recall at a later date. The final use is in the field of mapping values (such as ethics, or employee attitudes to safety) across broad populations and associated benchmarking.

The basic capture tool within SenseMaker™ designed to gather SMIs from a broad population. The material is self indexed at the point of capture. A linked set of methods provide a broad range of techniques in support. Collector is a customisable web based environment which can also be replicated on a PC.   Contains a range of analytical and interrogation tools that allow both recall and interpretation of SMIs. This module makes extensive use of visualisation to allow complex patterns and exceptions to be discovered. It combines the information processing capability of computers with the pattern based intelligence of humans.

Is used to represent a range of understandings of an emergent situation and then compare incoming data against that understanding. This provides some of the functionality normally handled by scenario planning. The ability to represent a field, such as a market as a landscape provides capability for opportunity and threat detection.   Provides an ability to distribute SMIs for indexing by specialist staff where the function is either to improve the productivity of analysts, or to gather statistical data on the way in which different populations index the same material. Benchmarking data-sets can be maintained and used for comparative reporting.

Allows for the replication of human indexing on new material. Classifiers are created using training data and provide the ability to index large volumes of material at low cost. This capability is used to handle issues of cross silo knowledge sharing and also provide the ability to see the world from many perspectives.   Used to create basic reporting and interpretative capability in environments where training in the advanced techniques of Explorer is not appropriate or possible. Applications include distributed field knowledge management & living oral histories. The design encourages discovery by walking about and can be linked to innovation initiatives

Current Releases

Collector v3.0 and Explorer / Modeler v2.1 are Current Release and in use by clients around the world. Explorer / Modeler v2.5b and Seeker v2.0 are in beta release. Seeker code currently resides with Collector. Classifier and Wanderer are in alpha release and available as separate project offerings. As such, Classifier and Wanderer are being used with clients in pilots.

The SenseMaker suite is a support tool for a stand-alone consultancy engagement. And it's an integrated and integrating part of other systems for operational use within an organisation.
