The basic unit of analysis within SenseMaker™ is the sense-making item or SMI. This can be an anecdote, a document, a photograph, a drawing, a blog or other URL reference. The SMI is normally indexed using a semi-structured set of tags at the point of origin, by its creator.
In other applications which focus on analyst productivity the material is indexed by specialists for fast recall at a later date. The final use is in the field of mapping values (such as ethics, or employee attitudes to safety) across broad populations and associated benchmarking.
